Dear Lauriol,

Oh Lauriol, I did love you once, when I was a fresh transplant from Texas, and no one knew the name of any "mexican" restaurant but you. All roads led to your overcrowded bar that met my basic requirements by sharing my belief that chips and salsa are a right, not an appetizer.

But, as we grow older, we grew apart, Lauriol and I. I found myself willing to compromise even that core belief in the pursuit of a more exploratory restaurant partner - one who would stay true to the core experience, but add spicy new additions here and there. A wider menu of options, if you will. Centro DF answered this call, and I'm not looking back.

Perfectly sauteed mushrooms lying atop masa-cakes with a hint of truffle oil? How naughty.

Red and Smoky cocktails with a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and hot? I'll have two.

Perfectly sweet, hot, pliable corn tamales, hidden among Centro's "sides"? Surely she knew I'd find them there.

I haven't even made it past Centro's delectable appetizers yet, and I'm a changed man.
